Calgary 2009 City Chase Winners - Jen Silverthorn & Jean-Pierre (JP) Buysschaert

  1. Expect the unexpected.  Being surprised at what you have to do at a chase point will just slow you down.

  2. Make decisions as quick as possible.  When you arrive at a chase point - decide quickly which partner is doing what part.  Don't be wishy-washy, when faced with a choice of tasks pick one and just do it.  It's better decide quickly, try something and if you can't do it - then switch tasks.

  3. Even before the race talk with your partner about your individual strengths, weaknesses, comfort zones and phobias.  Then when the race starts, you will be able to quickly choose which chase points you want to do and which you want to avoid if at all possible.

  4. Don't get frustrated - at yourself, at your partner, at a difficult chase point, at transit, or at the chase in general.  If you become frustrated and emotional, you are just wasting energy and time and not moving forward.

  5. Have a really keen sense of direction.  The more time you spend looking at a map, the more time you are standing still and falling behind.

  6. Learn how to read while running.

  7. As much as possible ask the public for directions.  Ask more than one person if necessary to make sure you got them straight the first time, rather than running in the wrong direction (we've all done that before)....

  8. And if things don't feel right, it probably isn't.  Trust your instinct & stop.  Don't keep running hoping to stumble upon the chase point.

  9. Always have a contingency plan.  If a bus doesn't arrive - know your options ahead of time.  Have a  back-up plan in case there's a line-up at the chase point.

  10. Work with your support crew, don't consider them just a 'phone-a-friend'.   Your support crew is part of your team, and they have to know in advance what you will need from them.  Make them part of the race and they will work for you instead of just responding to you.

& a bonus #11 ...  maybe the most important of them all:

  11. Most of all... have fun while chasing.  Relish the journey with your partner.  If you aren't having fun and enjoying the chase with a great big smile - then you are missing out.  Compete hard, compete in style, have some laughs - and crossing the finish line will be that much more rewarding.
