Part of the Checkpoint Tracker series in the Sport category, the Rock & Roll Adventure Race were held this past weekend in Mineral Wells, Texas. First to cross the finish line in a time of 9:28 were two teams of Flying Monkeys, a 4-person male and 2-person male team that completed the race together.
The first place co-ed team (third overall) was DFW Hounds in 9:57.  Fourth place went to team FIG-LIG, a 2-person all female team in 10:39.  4-person co-ed teams Trekking Teachers (11:09) and Mongrels (11:58) rounded out the top six teams, all of whom managed to sweep the course of all checkpoints.  The latter four teams are all currently registered in the Checkpoint Tracker series and accumulated points towards the National Championship being held in the Rocky Mountain region on October 29th.

The race began with a quick half mile run to spread teams out before a short 2 mile paddling section. After approximately 6-7 miles of trekking, teams had the option of trekking, biking, or paddling to the rappel site where CP6 was located.  Teams then had a long bike and trek ahead of them before the final paddle and bike sections, answering special test questions and accumulating as many CPs as possible along the way.

Highlights of the course included the climbing and rapelling sections that this course has become known for, as well as the many difficult navigational decisions to be made.  Forcing teams to think carefully about their strategy was one of the course design goals of SteelSports.net, who produce the Rock & Roll Adventure Race.  Explaining the rationale behind the course design, Rodney Skyles says, “usually a race with tough navigation makes them think more and creates a little more suspense . . . because you don’t know how you are standing up against the other teams.”

Racer feedback for the event was extremely positive, and due to the consistent success of their 12-hour event, SteelSports.net is thinking of adding a 24-hour race to the Rock & Roll roster for 2011. Stay tuned for more information on this, and on the other events put on by SteelSports.net at www.steelsports.net
